When it comes to comparing the Samsung Galaxy S23 FE vs the S23 Ultra, the decision can be quite challenging given the impressive features both phones have.

As someone who had the opportunity to use both phones extensively, I will share my insights and experiences to help you make the right decision. Here I shall  discuss some interesting and useful features of both devices, so let's start!

Design and Build Quality

The first thing you shall notice about the Galaxy S23 Ultra is its premium build quality. It features a sleek design with Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on both the front and back, and an aluminium frame that gives it a robust feel. The S23 FE, on the other hand, uses Gorilla Glass 5, which is still durable but not as advanced as the Victus 2. The Ultra is slightly larger and heavier, weighing 233 grams compared to the FE's 209 grams. This difference in weight and size is noticeable, especially if you prefer a more compact device.

S23 Ultra

· Gorilla Glass Victus 2 (front and back)

· Aluminium frame

· Weight: 233 grams

· Dimensions: 163.4 x 78.1 x 8.9 mm

 S23 FE

·  Gorilla Glass 5 (front and back)

·  Aluminium frame

·  Weight: 209 grams

·  Dimensions: 158 x 76.5 x 8.2 mm

Display

Both phones boast impressive displays, but the S23 Ultra takes the lead with its 6.8inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X screen, offering a resolution of 1440 x 3088 pixels and a pixel density of 501 PPI. The S23 FE features a slightly smaller 6.4inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with a resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels and a pixel density of 403 PPI. The Ultra's display is not only larger but also sharper and more vibrant, making it ideal for media consumption and gaming.

S23 Ultra

· 6.8inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X

· Resolution: 1440 x 3088 pixels

· Pixel density: 501 PPI

· Peak brightness: 1750 nits

S23 FE

· 6.4inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X

· Resolution: 1080 x 2340 pixels

· Pixel density: 403 PPI

· Peak brightness: 1450 nits

Performance

Under the hood, the S23 Ultra is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, while the S23 FE comes with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. The Ultra also offers more RAM, with options up to 12GB, compared to the FE's 8GB. In terms of performance, the Ultra is significantly faster and more efficient, handling multitasking and demanding applications with ease. The difference in performance is evident in benchmark tests, with the Ultra scoring 1543 K on AnTuTu compared to the FE's 1126K.

S23 Ultra

· Processor: Snapdragon 8 Gen 2

· RAM: Up to 12GB

· AnTuTu Benchmark: 1543K

S23 FE

· Processor: Snapdragon 8 Gen 1

· RAM: 8GB

· AnTuTu Benchmark: 1126K

Camera

The camera setup is one of the most significant differences between the two models. The S23 Ultra features a quad camera system with a 200MP main sensor, a 12MP ultrawide lens, and two 10MP telephoto lenses offering 3x and 10x optical zoom. The S23 FE, on the other hand, has a triple camera setup with a 50 MP main sensor, a 12MP ultrawide lens, and an 8MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom.

In real world usage the Ultra's camera system outperforms the FE in almost every aspect. The 200MP sensor captures incredible detail, and the 10x optical zoom is perfect for long distance shots. The Ultra also excels in lowlight conditions, thanks to its advanced image processing capabilities. The FE's camera is still impressive, especially for its price, but it does not quite match the Ultra's prowess.

S23 Ultra

· Main Camera: 200MP

· Ultrawide: 12MP

· Telephoto: 10MP (3x optical zoom) +10MP (10x optical zoom)

· Front Camera: 12MP

S23 FE

·  Main Camera: 50MP

· Ultrawide: 12MP

· Telephoto: 8MP (3x optical zoom)

·  Front Camera: 10MP

Battery Life

Battery life is another crucial factor to consider. The S23 Ultra comes with a 5000mAh battery, while the S23 FE has a 4500mAh battery. Despite the larger battery, the Ultra's higher resolution display and more powerful processor mean that battery life is relatively similar between the two devices.

In my experience, both phones can easily last a full day of moderate to heavy use. However, the Ultra supports faster 45W charging compared to the FE's 25W, which means you can get back to full power more quickly with the Ultra.

S23 Ultra

· Battery: 5000mAh

· Charging: 45W wired, 15W wireless

S23 FE

· Battery: 4500mAh

· Charging: 25W wired, 15W wireless

Software and Features

Both phones run on Android 13 with Samsung's One UI 5.1, offering a smooth and user friendly experience. The S23 Ultra has a few additional features that set it apart, such as the S Pen, which is great for note taking and drawing. The Ultra also supports Samsung DeX, allowing you to use your phone as a desktop computer when connected to a monitor. These features make the Ultra a more versatile device, especially for productivity focused users.

· Operating System: Android 13, One UI 5.1

· S Pen support

· Samsung DeX

S23 FE

· Operating System: Android 13, One UI 5.1

Price and Value

Price is often the deciding factor for many buyers. The S23 Ultra is significantly more expensive, with a starting price of around $1,199, while the S23 FE is more budget friendly at $599. The Ultra offers more advanced features and better performance, but the FE provides excellent value for money, especially if you do not need the extra bells and whistles.

S23 Ultra

  • Price: $1,199

S23 FE

  • Price: $599

Final Verdict

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is the superior device in almost every aspect, from display quality and performance to camera capabilities and additional features. However, it comes at a premium price. The S23 FE, while not as advanced, offers great value for money and is an excellent choice for those who want a high quality smartphone without breaking the bank.

If you prioritise top tier performance, camera quality, and additional features like the S Pen, the S23 Ultra is the way to go. But if you are looking for a more affordable option that still delivers solid performance and a great user experience, the S23 FE is a fantastic choice.

I hope this comparison helps you make the best decision. Both phones have different strengths and are excellent choices depending on your needs and budget.
