It’s that time of the year when Asus releases their new ROG Phone. For the past 4 years, Asus has been keeping up its endeavors to convey “The ultimate smartphone gaming experience”. The new ROG 5 series is here ready for the launch.

The new ROG 5 series has 2 extra phones ROG 5 Pro and ROG 5 Ultimate. The base model is expected to launch in mid-March, the Pro model in April, and Ultimate somewhere in May. The prices are around $800 (base model), 1200$ (Pro model), and $1300 (Ultimate model).

Why is ROG 4 skipped?

Yes it’s ROG 5 instead of 4. That’s because in Chinese number 4 happens to sound similar to death, so naming a products with this number people consider bad luck and that’s why Asus avoided it.

Unboxing

The new ROG 5 series comes incredibly well packet in this black matt box, and boy it is a fancy one. Besides the phone, in the box, you will find a protective case with an opening for the RGB logo/screen on the back, a 66W fast charger, and USB-C to USB-C cable.

Specifications

Display

They all come with an incredible 6.78-inch AMOLED display, having a screen resolution of 1080 x 2448 pixels and roughly 400PPI. These gaming smartphones have a 144Hz refresh rate which will give you the best gaming experience possible especially in first person shooter games. The screen to body ratio is 82% and the screen is protected with the new Corning Gorilla Glass Victus the toughest screen protection available.

Camera

The new Asus ROG phones feature with a triple camera setup on the back: 64MP main shooter camera, 13MP ultra wide camera, and 5MP macro camera. These incredible cameras can shoot 8k videos at 30fps and 4k videos at 30/60/120fps, which is truly incredible. On the front, they all have a single 24MP selfie camera that features panorama and HDR. This selfie camera can shoot 1080p videos at 30fps.

Configuration

They all have the newest Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chipset, which is the best chipset available. It will handle both gaming and everyday usage without any problems. They have Adreno 660 GPU ( high end-range GPU ), which is great for graphical effects. Asus ROG 5 has 8GB/12GB/16GB RAM, ROG 5 Pro has 16GB RAM and ROG 5 Ultimate comes with up to 18GB of RAM. All three of them will handle multitasking easily. ROG 5 comes with 128GB/256GB of storage, while ROG 5 Pro and ROG 5 Ultimate come with 512GB of storage. Storage may be a problem to you, since its not expandable so choose wisely.

Battery capacity

All of the new ROG 5 series phones come with a huge Li-Po 6000 mAh battery, which will provide more than a day of heavy gaming usage. All of them also have a 65W fast charging technology, so their battery comes from 0%-100% in only 52 mins. They also feature reverse 10W charging but lack wireless charging.

What’s the difference between models?

The only hardware-wise difference is in RAM quantity, but there are some physical differences. Both the Pro and Ultimate have PMOLED ROG Vision displays on the back, instead of just an RGB logo on the back. They also have a pair of extra touch inputs included which the base model doesn’t have included. They both come in exclusive colors. Pro has a Glossy Black color and the Ultimate comes with Matte White with a satin-matte finish. If you choose to go Pro or Ultimate you will get Asus Aeroactive Cooler 5 quick cooling accessory free in the box. And Ultimate comes with an exclusive gift bag.

AnTuTu Benchmark

AnTuTu is a Benchmark app for android users. It gives your device an overall numerical score as well as an overall score for each test it performs. It’s useful for comparing your device’s speed and performance with other options on the market. According to AnTuTu scores, ROG 5 series got a score of around 740k which is better than 99% of the phones currently available on the market.
